I had been a regular customer since the 1970's. Over the years, I have found that the waiters have gotten ruder and the atmosphere ever less welcoming. The place is in need of a good scrubbing, and now looks quite shabby. The staff don't care, since the place is still packed on Friday and Saturday nights. But I find myself picking up a dozen eggrolls to take home every time I am in the vicinity despite the negatives.

DO NOT EAT HERE. HORRIBLE SERVICE. AWFUL ATMOSPHERE. OVER PRICED.
We ended up being seated in a cramped corner where we couldn't even sit across from each other because the chairs were so squished. When it came time to order the menu look very good, the prices a bit high, but we wanted to enjoy ourselves so we treated ourselves to the dinner for 2 option 2.
I am allergic to pork so I asked if instead of the ribs that we could get something with chicken in it instead. The server told us rudely that it would cost 4 extra dollars.
I thought that it was rather high but I was going to just deal with the cost because I wanted to have a nice evening out.
When the first course came my date got wonton soup and I got the chicken noodle, the server carelessly just plunked it down and left.
The soup had no flavour. It was disgusting. we did not complain at all. We just waited for the second course to come.
By the time it came, being already dissatisfied I kid you not, the server simply threw the plates down, the dipping sauce actually spilt on the table.
When my boyfriend bit into it we both realized that it was pork. My egg roll untouched, we called over another server to explain the situation, The fact that I had told our initial server that I was allergic to pork, and If we could get a vegetarian choice instead.
The told us straight out that all they had was pork and that I could not get a replacement. i had to pay for it.
At this point we realized that we were not going to pay the full price for this awful meal and service, it was not worth it. So my boyfriend walked up to our server and told him that we were done, and that we would pay for the meal that we had already received, but that we would not continue to dine. we heard them and saw them talking about us and pointing at our table. may i just say that up to this point i had been nothing but nice towards them.
He along with another server told him that our food was already cooked and that we would have to pay for the full amount, even though we hadn't even received the meal past the egg rolls. It took another 5 minutes for my boyfriend to essentially barter to get the price down to 15 dollars for what we had eaten. Believe me I was so angry at this point that my boyfriend was far more generous then I would have been.
We paid the 15 dollars for the meal (you must remember that we had only eaten one bowl of soup each and 1 egg roll because I couldn't even eat mine.)
I have lived in Ottawa for 13 years, and never have I walked out on an establishment. I have never felt so entirely disrespected, and swindled, 15+ dollars was unacceptable. No restaurant would ever make a customer pay for bad service.
TERRIBLE!!! Ive never been so disgusted with a meal!! Dinner for 2 fifty dollars and bad service. I tried and simply couldnt eat this garbage. Ribs with no meat. Soup tasted like a bucket of salt and 3 days old!
When I was leaving I didnt even want to pay, let alone leave a tip. I was paying debit and the guy asked me where the tip was.... HOW RUDE! Im not going to leave a tip for something that terrible!!!
Top ten reasons I will never dine at Golden Palace again
1) Crappy food.
2) Rude service.
3) Long wait.
4) Bad location.
5) Ridiculously high prices.
6) Dirty atmosphere (place looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in decades).
7) Lots of 'tude.
8) No delivery.
9) Skimpy portions.
10) Sick the next day.
Why would ANYONE in their right mind ever eat here a second time?
I'd also heard all the hype about this place, and especially their eggrolls. All I am left asking is, what are you guys smoking?
Everything tasted like it was from a discount mall food court, except not quite as good, but at twenty times the price. Yes, even the famous eggrolls aren't that great. Terribly greasy and stuffed full of cut-rate ingredients.
I just don't get it. Still shaking my head at all the people who seem to think this is an amazing dining experience. Only amazing thing is how much it sucked.

I had heard over and over that this was by far, bar none, THE best Chinese food in Ottawa.
I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I finally tried it last month, with a take-out. The place was busy as heck, so clearly it is indeed very popular. However, the service was still unreasonably slow and not exactly friendly. It was pretty much reminiscent of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, i.e., "What do you want? Place your order! Give me your money! Move along! Next!' conveyor belt sort of service. Fair enough, I thought--they do a brisk business, so that would have been acceptable, were in not for a couple of facts...
One The prices are outrageously expensive, especially as compared to restaurants of similar (and better) quality throughout the region. All told and tallied, it was over $50 for what amounted to a pretty average four-dish dinner for two plus extra egg rolls.
Two The food is REALLY not that great. Overhyped, certainly. Great, no. I've had FAR better meals from Cathay, Peach Gardens and a variety of other places. And all this blather about them making the best egg rolls in town? Give me a break. I've had far better at many other restaurants. I really wish I hadn't ordered the extra dozen, but I guess I succumbed to the hype.
Do yourself a favour and stick to your regular place, or try somewhere new...but not a place that is so overhyped, unfriendly, and priced into the stratosphere.
I don't know why people flock there...perhaps there is something in Ottawa's drinking water.
