Fair. They do offer deals on national branded shelf goods that are past the sell before dates which can be a great bargain as long as you're careful. Their actual deli counter seems to do a brisk turnover as with the butchers' stuff; however they do re-package in-house sliced deli meats into bulk-bargain lots and I once got such a 1-Kg pack of smoked turkey with a colony of fungus or slime mold inside. The scary thing is I chose my package from the refrigerated bunker because the ones in the deep freeze were even older I thought. I don't mind tossing away a dollars worth of food myself so much as the loss of trust that they would risk someone's health rather than dumping stale meat in the first place. I'll stay away from the in-house packed stuff from now on.
I have been to Sals many times, I have never found anything wrong with the food, I am very cautious on what I eat but I have no worries with this store, some people think that because its cheap something must be wrong with it, he has been there for many years and still remain open, so you know he must be doing something right. I do not listen to the bad comments. I like the store I enjoy the products, I will keep shopping there. Now a days if you can save a buck why not, especially with food prices going up all the time. I am family man who got injured on the job, so every buck I can save, trust me I will do it. Some of you that comment about dates, learn the difference between best before and expiry, and even expiry does not always mean something wrong with it.
